NYC Adventure - Day 8..and 9

When we woke up Friday morning, the extent of our New York City adventure was reaching our bodies, straight to the bone. We were bone-tired. Kylee said, "I'm glad we didn't do New York for two weeks. I would have not made it another day!" Not one of us argued with her.

Our plane was due to leave La Guardia at 12:55, flying to Chicago, then Vegas, then El Paso. After a taxi ride to the airport, hauling all of our many, heavy bags to check in, and getting through security, we were so happy our plane was on time. We board the airplane at 12:30, taxied out to the tarmac, and sat there. Our pilot announced that there were thunder storms surrounding the area, and La Guardia had grounded all take offs. He didn't know for how long, but he was going to shut the engines down while we waited. And waited. And waited. When this hit, though, I was so glad to be on the ground. It shook the plane relentlessly. I was scared, and we were on the ground!

About two and a half hours later, the pilot announced they were allowing planes to leave, and we were number 10. When we started moving, I was so happy. I knew we could still make our connection in Chicago. But we didn't move to the runway. We went back to the gate. Our three hours on the tarmac had run, and by law, they are required to return to the gate and give us the opportunity to get off the plane. They told us it would be about 15 to 20 minutes. It was two more hours. The thunderstorms had once again grounded planes, so we were stuck. After two hours, we taxied out again. Because of the back up of planes trying to get out, we were number 33 in line for take off. So after another hour and a half on the tarmac, for a total of six and a half hours on the plane only moving about 20 yards, we took off.

We got to Chicago a little before nine p.m. Of course, all connecting flights to Texas were gone. We were spending the night in Chicago. They told us they had put us on a plane departing Chicago at 6:30 a.m., and they were setting up cots on Concourse C for us to sleep on. Ummm...no thanks. Oh..and there would be no bags. Our bags would not be returned to us until we were in El Paso.

They gave us a "voucher" to call to get a hotel room. This "voucher" was NOT for a free room. Because the delay was due to weather, the airlines do not provide a hotel room. The voucher is simply a number to call, and they will research and find you the cheapest room nearest the airport. Which was fine with me! I had no idea where to stay in Chicago, so just find me a place to lay my weary head! I was frustrated and exhausted, but surprisingly calm.

There was a shuttle from the airport to the Sleep Inn. The kids were starving, as we hadn't eaten since breakfast except for airplane food. As the shuttle pulled in to the hotel, there was a TGIFridays and the same parking lot. Thank you, Lord, for small miracles. We had supper, that Kylee is still raving about to this day (I honestly think that child was starving), and went to bed. We slept from 11 pm to 4 am and headed back to the airport to try to get home once again.

Our flight was on time. The marquee showed service from Chicago to El Paso. YAY!! We boarded the plane, pulled out our blankets, and settled in for a nap to get us home. The pilot came over the speaker to welcome us aboard our flight to El Paso...via Los Angeles!!!!!! That's right folks. We literally flew ACROSS the country to get home!! We left Friday afternoon looking out the airplane window of the Hudson River, and we landed Saturday in Los Angeles, California, where we very literally saw the waves crashing in on the sandy beaches.

After a brief (thank God!) stop in LA, we flew to El Paso. I have never, ever, ever in my life been so happy to be in El Paso, Texas, ever. The kids were so excited to see their puppies.

Just as we walked in the door and they were loving their dogs, my cell phone rang. It was a flight attendant from Southwest. Kylee left her laptop on the plane. We (well, Kylee and I) had to go back to the airport and get it.

Then we were home. For good. Home sweet home. Well, until the kids left Wednesday for the beach.

NYC Adventure - Day 7

Thursday we decided to slow down a bit. Well, actually Wednesday night we decided to slow down a bit. We had seen all but two things we I had on our to do list, so we slept in. Well, to an extent. We had to wake Kylee or she would have slept all day.

After saying goodbye to Papa and Nanaand seeing them into their taxi, the four of us boarded the subway headed to the neighboring stateto go see the Cake Boss at Carlo's Bakery. Kylee was so excited!!

The subway ride was amazingly short! We took the subway all the way to the last stop in NYC. Then we jumped on the PATH train straight to Hoboken, NJ

It is a very short walk from the subway to the bakery. When we got off the subway and spotted this,we figured we would just follow it. We didn't realize the line would be down and across the street!! Well, I guess Kylee may have realized it, because she took a seat and pulled the movie playerfrom her purse. I had no idea she had brought it! Smart girl! Especially since we stood in line for over an hour to get hereso we could go insideand check out all the goodies!

Kylee knew exactly what she wanted: a crumb cake, lobster tails, a brownie, red velvet cupcakes, carrot cake cupcakes, and, of course cannoli. Blaine wanted an M&M cookie. We got it...all of it, and more!! She also wanted to see people she knew from the show, but she didn't see anybody. After waiting in the bakery for our number to be called, our order to be put together, and to pay, we had to wait in another line for merchandise. As we moved over, she saw them. Good things come in three, and they did. While we were waiting for our aprons and tshirts, Madelyn came closer. Kylee smiled big at her, and I told her to say hello. Madelyn said, "Well, let me come over there so I can hear you." And that's how we got this. She was so sweet to Kylee!!

Then with all of our loot, goodies and merchandise, we headed outside for a taste...in front of the bakery,of course. And Joey took one of my favorite pictures of our trip.

Kylee, being the avid Cake Boss watcher she is, wanted to see if we could find the pizzeria Buddy always talks about for lunch. As we headed down the street looking for it, we passed the alley of the bakery. Blaine said, "Hey, that's the door where Anthony threw the pie in his face." Guess he's an avid watcher, too!Right after we took this picture, somebody opened that door to come out for a smoke break. When he did, I saw Buddy inside with Mauro icing a cake. I told Kylee. She did not believe me. So we stood there. The guy went back in from his smoke break. I missed the picture, but Kylee saw him, too, so we waited. Another couple came down the alley asking if we had seen anything, and we told them what we had seen. They waited with us. Somebody else came out that door, and we all yelled for Buddy. In the excitement, I wasn't even thinking of a picture, but he smiled and waved at us. At this point, we were so excited.

Kylee said, "I have figured out the code." You know, the code that they push to get in the door. The guy from the couple that had joined us asked her what it was. She told him. He went to the door, with Kylee mortified and totally freaking out, to try it. It worked. He didn't open the door fully but turned it enough to see that it had, in fact, unlocked the door. Not very secure that my 12-year old could watch a couple of people taking smoke breaks go back in and figure it out. We had to promise her we wouldn't tell anybody else and nobody would try to open the door again, as she was very near tears.

We waited more. One person came from outside, going back in the bakery. We asked her if when she went in, she could hold the door open just a little longer and a little wider so we could get a picture. How sweet was she?!(Yes, it was a she and not the guy eating his goodie who looks like he's holding the door.) We yelled at Buddy again. He just looked and smiled. Then the camera guy came out. He told us they didn't mind if we stood there, watched for him, and took pictures, but not to yell because they were picking us up on their mikes. OOOPPSS! We promised we would shut up!

Kylee was mortified and ready to go. We stood for one more door opening for one more sighting, with NO yelling, and headed out. We walked around a little looking for the pizzeria, which we didn't find. As we walked back by the bakery, we asked one of the "uniformed" bakery workers if he knew. He told us where it was. As we were walking off, past the alley again, toward the pizzeria, Blaine said, "Diddy, look! We know him!" She said, "Oh, yea! That's Frankie." I politely asked Frankie if he would take a picture with my kids. He said he would, as long as we made it quick as not to draw a crowd.I'm a camera expert with my trusty shutter clicks, and it was fast, another quick thank you, and we were off to the pizzeria.

Oh, the pizzeria. I am not a big pizza lover, but if I lived in Hoboken, NJ, I could be! Joeysaid we had to leave because he could keep eating the stuff until he made himself sick. We left the pizzeria, resisting another walk down the infamous alley, back toward the subway. Since we were walking in the opposite direction we had been when we arrived, I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. The Hudson River! It was beautiful!

As we walked towards the PATH train headed back into the city, we decided if we ever do another NYC trip, we are staying in the slower paced, beautiful Hoboken, NJ, and taking the train to New York, instead of the other way around.

On the train, Kylee decided to sample a cannoli. Those things are heavenly. Hea.ven.ly!! We have had one before, and while good, it wasn't something I would waste so many Weight Watcher points for. This one? Well, let's just say I ate two, even after being so good all week!

After Cake Boss, there was really only one other thing I really wanted to take the kids to before we left. It was restaurant, and since we had just eaten and could go for supper, we let the kids decide what they wanted to do for the next couple of hours. So back to the pool we went. After all, on Monday night (you know, before the Yankee game) when I asked what their favorite part of the trip so far was, Blaine's answer was, "Swimming!"

While we were in the room putting the kids' suits on, I noticed Kylee putting shampoo and conditioner in her purse. She loved that the pool locker rooms had showers and blow dryers, so she took all she needed for her shower that night. She showered, lotioned, and blow dryed her hair at the pool.

For supper we made our last stop on my to do list.I found this in the same book I found Ellen's in, only this one was for Blaine. My boy loves him some PB&J. It was funny to me that my friend, Missy Cook, sent me a message on Facebook while we were there asking if I would go check it out for her when it was already on my list. Maybe I should ask where she heard about it.

Anyway...although it wasn't what I expected, it was the neatest LITTLEplace. (in this picture, I am standing at the kitchen door looking out on the ENTIRE restaurant) It is right in the middle of the NYU Law school campus and on the street behind what seemed to be an NYC version of Austin's 6th street. It has the neatest menu and gifts.Anything and everything you can think of (and a lot you would NEVER think of), they add with peanut butter for sandwiches. Kylee had a flutternutter, which is peanut butter and marshmallow creme, and Blaine and Joey had plain 'ole PB&Js,one with strawberry jelly and the other with grape. Mom had a chicken sandwich. Peanut butter was way too many points, especially after that cannoli!

When we were finished, it was time to go home. Literally. We went back to the hotel, and we I packed to get ready for our flight home Friday.

You may think this is the end of our NYC adventure, and so did we. Boy, we were in for a surprise!

NYC Adventure - Day 6

Kylee's Day. My sweet girl. My amazing big sister. My firstborn with a heart of gold. Day 6 was her day.

Because Papa and Nana were "late additions" to our trip, we already had tickets for Kylee's day and weren't able to change them. So Wednesday morning, Nana took Papa to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island while the boys swam. Kylee dressed Sparkle, and she and I hailed a cab to the American Girl Store.I expected greatness, but not three stories of greatness.I think we went up and down the three stories about ten times just looking.

Our first stop was the photography studio.
While we were there, we learned that Sparkle's head was a little loose. Not really a shock since Kylee has had her for nine years, but we took a trip to the infirmary. Kylee quickly informed me that if she had to be checked in to the hospital, that wasn't ok with her. If they check your baby into the hospital, they take them for weeks and then ship them home. Luckily, Sparkle wasn't checked in,just treated on site. What a relief.

Kylee was a little disappointed Sparkle doesn't have any hair when she saw all the mommies taking their babies to the hair salon. Sparkle wanted her ears pierced, but her mother thought that was an awful idea. Kylee shopped like a typical mother, so after taking inventoryof what she was actually going to purchase for her, combining all the money from her piggie bank, what Dad Dad and Mom Mom had given her, and what I told her I would contribute, she narrowed down her selections, made her purchases, and we jumped back in a cab, loot in tow, to pick up the boys for the next part of her day.

Kylee has told us for years she is going to teach school during the day and dance on Broadway at night. I think she's beginning to realize that may not be possible, but we will see. Her next pick was a Broadway show. Of course, Blaine begged her to see Spiderman, but it was her day, and she got to pick. She picked. I hadn't seen it either and was excited, too. I took this"illegal" picture (no photos inside) when we sat down.

What an amazing show! Not only did I love the experience of Broadway, it was so heightened by going with Kylee. She laughed and snickered and gasped and frowned and went through all the emotions as the show played out. Blaine actually watched the whole thing, too, with no requests for a bathroom break.

When we walked in, we had seen some props, etc, but Kylee just wasn't interested because she didn't know what they were. As we left, though, sheenjoyed them.

After the show, we met back up with Papa and Nana for a carriage ride through Central Park. We were disappointed to learn they can only take 4 on the ride, but it gave me an opportunity for pictures as my kidsstrapped in their kids, and the grandparentspiled in for the ridethrough Central Park.

We then made our second trip to Blaine really wanted to take Papathere, and on her day, Kylee consented. She probably had thisin mind when she did. That girl just can't resist a good dessert!

After supper, we made our last stop per Kylee's request on her day, the Disney Store,Times Square style, before headingback to the room to call it a night. We thought. The kids wanted to go swimming. It was already 9:30, but we took them anyway. After all, day 7, although way exciting (just wait!), was not too jam-packed.

NYC Adventure - Day 5

Game day!!! a.k.a. Blaine's day.

You see, both kids had their day. Every day in NYC was their day, but on Blaine's day, he picked the game. On Kylee's day, she picked Broadway. So on those two days, we allowed it to be their day. They got to pick restaurants, where to go next, etc, without having to agree with each other.

Look who made it to New York City!!Can I just tell you how excited my little Yankee was to see the grandfather Yankee? Oh, my! Beyond!

So after breakfast, we took Papa (Nana has been to NYC before) to see Times Square before then showing Papa his first subwayto the stop of NYC,at least as far as the Onick boys were concerned. And then....then we were there.I think I heard the music, you know the music that they play in movies when you get there, I think I heard it through my boy's (or boys') excitement.

The subway ride didn't take as long as we thought it would, so we were there a little early for our tour. Blaine had brought his glove in hopes of catching a fly ball during the game, but he had no ball. So he and his Daddywent into the store to find a ball to play catchwhile we waited.

We entered Yankee Stadium for the first time, caught our breath, and headed upstairs to the Yankee museum. They told us in the elevator that there was no FLASH photography allowed. I specifically asked if I could take photos with no flashed and was assured as long as there was no flash, photography was allowed. I guess Kylee and Blaine didn't hear that part, because when I took my first picture, they were quick to try to correct me. After working that out with them, I, of course, continued to take pictures in the museum.

As we were led to Monument Park, we caught our first glimpse of the field itself. We didn't yet realize the granduer of it yet, but, oh, we would. Monument parkwas more exciting for the originalYankee fans, Kylee let me take her picturewhile Blaine had to use the restroom. We had been told to go to the restroom before the tour, as there would be no place to go on the tour. But one of the guides told Blaine he could "water" the grass of the visiting team's bullpen. So he took him.

The next stop was a great place for thisamazing shot of Blaine. Can you guess where he is? He is sitting in the Yankee dugout looking out over Yankee Stadium. That's right. The whole familywent inside the Yankee dugout. While we were allowed on the field for thispicture, they were VERY concerned about us stepping toe foot on the grass.

Then it was over. But only the tour was over. We still had the gameto look forward to. Although we took the last tour of the game day, we still had two and a half hours to kill between the end of the tour and the opening of the gates for the game. Lucky for us, there is a Hard Rock Cafe at Yankee Stadium.Even after our lazy lunch, we still had time before the gates opened at 5. So we shoppedand played more catchand schmoozed with this guy.

Just as we were lining up to head into the Stadium once again, it came. We had prayed for months for it. Our prayers were answered at the most inopportune time at the most inopportune place.Rain. And rain it did. It let up enough for us to get to our amazing seats. Thispicture was taken with no zoom. We were that close. As we sat, it rained more. At one point, it was raining so hard, we sat there in our ponchos, no one speaking, just letting it fall over us. We sat there long enough Blaine fell asleep, in his chair, in the rain, in his poncho. It was raining hard enough I didn't dare take out my camera for a picture of the sweet boy snoozing. Then it stopped, and after a 45 minute rain delay, they pulled off the tarpand said, "Play Ball!" And as we watchedplay ball they did.

And just when we thought it couldn't get any better, CC Sabathia threw a pitch to Josh Hamilton, who hit a pop fly ball right to our section, two rows above us. When hecaught it, he gave it to Blaine. We bought that beer he is drinking and every other beer he drank that night until he left. I would have bought him anything he asked for after that smile on Blaine's face.

And it kept getting better. I knew this part was coming, but it didn't dim the excitement of it. While doing my research, I discovered you can pay to have anything you want put on the LCD screen, matched in size only by the Dallas Cowboys in their stadium, while it is read as an announcement all through the stadium. They only do 10 per game, and it is first come, first serve. I told nobody about it. Ours came in the 5th inning when thispopped up on the aforementioned screen and echoed through the stadium in the announcer's voice. Blaine's head popped up. He raised his hand as if they were looking for him, and then I got the grin matching the one in the fly ball picture. It was worth every penny just for that smile, not to mention the fact that the money goes to a charity in New York for underpriviledged children.

In the 7th inning, "this guy" came back around to get Blaine on the LCD screen again. When we started in the beginning of planning this trip calling this day "Blaine's day", boy, did we have no idea how much of Blaine's day it would really be.

Don't worry. Kylee got what she wanted, too. From the beginning of planning Blaine's day, all she wanted from the ballpark was kettle corn. I bought her the biggest amount of kettle corn they had,and I carried that bucket all the way to El Paso.

You don't see pictures of Papa and Nana sitting with us because originally it was just the four of us. Then I had a brilliant, daughter-in-law of the year idea (hehe). I asked Joey if he wanted to invite his parents, and we would buy their tickets for Mother's Day and Father's Day. While we couldn't get seats right next to us, they were only one section over, on the same row, but the Yankees are as strict about where you are allowed to go with your tickets as they are about stepping on the grass. Towards the end of the game, though, as the Yankee's lead got larger and the crowd got smaller, the kids snuck over to their section to visit.

And then with a score of 12-4, the Yankees won, and it was over. Prized baseball in hand,we boarded the subway back to the hotel for the rest we so desperately needed after this long, amazing, and fun-filled day.
